After spending my entire career in the classroom, 2024 brought an unexpected and heartbreaking change: I became the teacher who couldn't teach. Following a series of serious health issues, my consultant advised that the risk of infection in a classroom environment was simply too high. Reluctantly, I handed in my notice and began searching for a new way to stay connected to the work I loved.

I explored roles in local authorities, educational publishing and wider education services, but none offered the direct connection with children and young people that had always been at the heart of my career. Around that time, a few friends asked if I would consider private tuition. What began as a temporary solution quickly grew through word-of-mouth recommendations, and before long I had a thriving group of tutees.

By the end of that first year, I was fully booked, yet enquiries kept arriving. It became clear that there was a huge demand for high-quality tuition. But I also noticed something deeper: while academic progress was often the reason families first got in touch, many were equally concerned about confidence, wellbeing and their child's relationship with learning. As I worked with more children, it became increasingly clear that when confidence grew, academic success often followed.

That realisation inspired Luminate Tutoring: an agency connecting families with experienced, knowledgeable and caring tutors who see the whole child, not just their academic outcomes. Our aim is simple — to help children and young people grow in confidence, rediscover their potential, enjoy learning and, ultimately, to Luminate.
